Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

The Georgia O'Keeffe museum is dedicated to, as the name might hint, the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. She is one of the most famous and important representatives of the American Modernist movement. This amazing museum was opened on July 17, 1997 in memory of O'Keeffe eleven years after she passed away. She shines in New Mexico because of her beautiful representations of skyscrapers and colorful flowers that call this state their home. These paintings are well-preserved in this important and iconic museum. As a fun fact, the museum also owns Keeffe’s property but it is not available for the public. So iconic has this museum become that it was shown in the infamous series Breaking Bad.

Meow Wolf

Meow Wolf is a modern art collection museum. As an amazing idea, it was created by a group of young residents of this city who wanted to provide Santa Fe with an alternative art and music scene, fully represented with this place. Starting out as a place where underground music was featured, the shows were replaced in 2010 by a permanently located museum. Here you will appreciate some of the most immersive art techniques with an interactive and narrative style. In fact, a variety of techniques can be found in the museum, with some traditional ones like sculpture, painting and photography, as well as more modern or progressive ones like augmented and virtual reality and video production. There's even things you wouldn't expect to find in a museum, like costuming, performance and narrative writing. So you can be sure there's something there for everyone that visits.

A Brief History

Santa Fe is the fourth largest city in New Mexico, as well as being the state capital. Santa Fe holds the title of the oldest city in New Mexico, as well as being the oldest capital city in the United States.

The current area of Santa Fe was initially occupied by an indigenous people called the Tanoan who were settled along the Rio Grande since around the year 900 until, in 1598, Juan de Oñate colonized the whole area of New Mexico and called it New Spain. In 1607 the first ville in the territory was established: La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis (The Royal Town of the Holy Faith Of Saint Francis Of Assisi). After some years, the ville was built upon and became the currently known Santa Fe. In 1680 some indigenous groups successfully won over the Spanish government and recovered their independence until 1692 when they were conquered again by Diego de Vargas. This ended in 1810 when Mexico gained its independence with the end of their Mexican War of Independence. The territory was received by the United States government as one of the keys to the end of the war that Mexicans and Americans held from 1846 to 1848 when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed.

Geography & Climate

Santa Fe has a total area of 96.9 km2 with an elevation of 7,199 feet above sea level which makes it the highest capital city in the United States. This area is characterized for its similar weather along the year which variates from 14° to 17° C, but it can reach a minimum temperature of -0.9° C and a maximum of 21° C in certain moments of the year.
